This article discusses the problem of translating Croatian modernist literature into Polish, especially regarding translation related to the scope of the ‘body’ and ‘corporeality’. The way in which the body is depicted in literary works causes particular problems in translation, yet in the same time it suggests the choice of proper translation strategies. The aspect of the ‘body’ (especially the ‘disease of the body’, ‘disintegration of the body’ and the concept of the ‘brain’ as an organ within which the soul, the body and the mind integrate) is highly substantial for the entire European modernist literature, including Croatian and Polish. Examples mentioned in this article support this claim. In the novel titled Isušena kaljuža the aspect of destruction and disease of the body is one of the main factors determining its structure. A great part of the article is dedicated to the analysis of how the word ‘mozak’ functions in the novel. We seek Polish equivalents for this term and attempt to apply them in the translation basing on the knowledge of the literature of that time and Modernist era contexts. The article is concluded with a statement, that translation of Janko Polić Kamov’s works into Polish one ought to search for new linguistic patterns in the Polish literature preceding 1914.
