The role of context in Biblical translation of polysemic terms

W praktyce przekładu kontekst socjolingwistyczny tworzonego translatu bardzo często staje się jednym z czynników decydujących o doborze strategii tłumaczenia, determinując między innymi sposób tłumaczenia terminów polisemicznych oryginału. Oznacza to, że porównanie terminów polisemicznych oryginału oraz ich ekwiwalentów pozwala ujrzeć często ukryty kontekst socjolingwistyczny, do którego dostosowuje się tłumacz. Artykuł przedstawia współzależność kontekstu socjolingwistycznego i strategii tłumaczenia terminów polisemicznych w przekładzie biblijnym na podstawie porównania wybranych współczesnych polskich i angielskich tłumaczeń Biblii oraz pokazuje w jaki sposób odmienność kontekstu skutkuje odmiennymi rozwiązaniami translatorskimi i jak odmienne rozwiązania translatorskie stwarzają nowe konteksty i możliwości interpretacji tekstu.

Translation strategies, including translation of the polysemic terms of the source text, are determined by the sociolinguistic context of the target text. This means that comparing polysemic terms of the source text and their equivalents enables us to see the sociolinguistic context of the target text that is sometimes hidden and not easily accessible to the target reader. The article presents the interdependence of context and strategy translation of polysemic terms in the biblical translation on the basis of selected contemporary Polish and English translations of the Bible and shows how different sociolinguistic contexts generate different translations and how different translations creates in turn new possibilities for interpreting the text.
