Marcin spod Dzikiej Jabłoni Eleanor Farjeon (1921) wyszedł w Polsce w roku 1966 w wydawnictwie Nasza Księgarnia w przekładzie znanej autorki piszącej dla dzieci, Hanny Januszewskiej. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono biografię Farjeon (1881-1965), wywodzącej się z kręgów lewicującej inteligencji londyńskiej rówieśniczki Virginii Woolf, i w skrócie omówiono jej twórczość, zwłaszcza zaś Marcina spod Dzikiej Jabłoni. Zwrócono uwagę na bogaty kontekst kulturowy i intertekstualny utworu, jego zakorzenienie w pejzażu, historii i realiach hrabstwa Sussex, zasugerowano też możliwe kierunki interpretacyjne. Uwagę poświęcono również uwagę ilustracjom w wydaniu angielskim i polskim (autorstwa Charlesa Edmunda Brocka oraz Józefa Wilkonia). Krótka analiza porównawcza angielskiego tekstu i polskiego przekładu pokazała, że na skutek licznych ingerencji tłumaczki polski translat, sporządzony z myślą o odbiorcy dziecięcym, znacznie różni się od oryginału. Książka Farjeon była z pewnością napisana dla dorosłych, o czym świadczą zarówno jej geneza, słowa samej autorki, miłosna tematyka utworu, jak i szata graficzna oryginału. Ponieważ Farjeon od lat 50. XX wieku zaczęła być uważna za pisarkę nieomal wyłącznie dziecięcą, Marcin spod Dzikiej Jabłoni przez pomyłkę uznany został w Polsce za utwór dla najmłodszych.

The main subject of this article is Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard (1921), a book by Eleanor Farjeon, published in Poland as Marcin spod Dzikiej Jabłoni in 1966 in a clearly child-oriented publishing institute Nasza Księgarnia; moreover, in translation of Hanna Januszewska, a very well-known writer for children of that time. In a given paper first the biography of Farjeon (1881-1965), a representative of the British pre-war leftish intelligentsia (and Virginia Woolf’s age) has been presented, as well as the most important highlights of her oeuvre, with special emphasis being put on Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard. A book in question has been analysed in terms of its vast cultural and intertextual contexts, its deep-rooting in the landscape, history and reality of Sussex. In addition, quite a few possible models of its interpretation have been suggested. Special attention has been given to the illustrations (in the English edition by Charles Edmund Brock, in the Polish one by Józef Wilkoń). A short comparative analyses of the English original and the Polish rendering has shown that, owing to the numerous changes introduced by the translator (who was undoubtedly working with a child-reader in mind), the differences between them are quite conspicuous. Farjeon’s book was surely written for the adult readers, just to take into consideration its origin, its clearly amorous subject-theme, the very declaration of the author herself, not to mention the artistic layout of the first English edition (courageous, erotic representations of the female nudes). However, from the 1950s onwards, Eleanor Farjeon has been almost exclusively regarded worldwide as a writer for children - probably owing to this fact, Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard, her early work, by mistake must have been classified in Poland as belonging to the genre of juvenile literature.
