Spiritual transformation as the key notion of the developmental psychology

W psychologii duchowość jest nadal kontrowersyjnym przedmiotem badań. Mimo to ich liczba rośnie wraz z rozwojem procesów cywilizacyjnych w świecie Zachodu. Najczęściej są to analizy duchowości w ujęciu substancjalnym, szczególnie takim, które uznaje ją za to, co o niej myślą badane osoby. Poglądy psychologów, które są interesujące w prezentowanym ujęciu, można podzielić na jawne i ukryte. Pierwsze to koncepcje o filozoficznym, psychoanalitycznym i humanistycznym rodowodzie (zwykle niepoddające się operacjonalizacji), drugie to te, których autorom kategoria duchowości być może nie była potrzebna, a jednak z duchowością wydają się mieć wiele wspólnego. Proponowane rozwiązanie to duchowość jako szczególny proces przemiany. Jej rezultatem jest mniej lub bardziej skuteczne poradzenie sobie z sytuacją egzystencjalną. Ponieważ roboczo można wyróżnić dwa typy takich sytuacji: o charakterze ostatecznym (przemijalność) oraz nieostatecznym (mniej lub bardziej dotkliwe ograniczenia), są też dwa typy możliwej przemiany. W obu przypadkach przemiana to specyficzna dla rodzaju sytuacji egzystencjalnej autokreacja. Rozumienie duchowości jako przemiany umożliwia jej operacjonalizację poprzez pomiar doświadczenia uznanego w tym miejscu za wskaźnik: poczucia świętości. Można przeprowadzić pomiar tego doświadczenia przed wystąpieniem konkretnej sytuacji egzystencjalnej i po okresie uznanym za końcowy punkt radzenia sobie z nią. Duchowość – transcendowanie ograniczeń – to proces rozgrywający się w szczególnym egzystencjalnym kontekście. W celu pełniejszego przedstawienia, czym jest przemiana duchowa, jej cechy opisano w końcowej części rozważań.

Spirituality is still the controversial subject matter of psychological research. In spite of it, the volume of research grows along the development of civilization processes in the Western world. Mostly there are the analyses of spirituality in the substantial approach, particularly those considered spirituality in the mode the research subject use to think about it. The views of psychologists being of interest within the present approach, can be divided into salient and hidden ones. The first kind of them are concepts of philosophical, psychoanalytic, and humanistic origins (usually not subjected for operationalization); the second kind are those, whose authors were not desperately looking for considering them theories of spirituality, nevertheless they seem to have with spirituality much in common. The proposed solution is spirituality as the process of the unique transformation. The more or less successful coping with the existential situation is the outcome. Since there is possible to distinguish tentatively two types of these situations: one of the ultimate character (perishability) , and one not ultimate (the existential limitations are more or less harmful), likewise there are two types of possible transformation. In both cases the transformation is the self-creation unique for particular kind of the existential situation. The understanding of spirituality as transformation allows for its operationalization by the measurement of this experience assumed here the index: the feeling of sacredness. One can measure this experience before the particular situation takes place, and after the period considered the endpoint of coping with it. Spirituality – the transcendence of the limitations – is the process occurring within the unique existential context.
