Tematem książki jest analiza korespondencji dziewiętnastowiecznych działaczy słowiańskiego odrodzenia narodowego, która - jak dotychczas - pozostaje w cieniu tekstów publicystycznych, naukowych i literackich, przynajmniej w obrębie polskiej slawistyki. Listy zostały tu zaprezentowane jako przede wszystkim „teksty kultury”, które - w ramach badania pewnych praktyk epistolarnych - traktować można jako de facto jeden tekst, pełen „słów-kluczy” antycypujących całość patriotycznego imaginarium w myśl tezy, że każdy znak właściwie zinterpretowany prowadzi zawsze do lepszego poznania kodu. Ukazana w książce korespondencyjna wspólnota (realna, ale również „wyobrażona”, a nawet - w najlepszym sensie tego słowa - „wymarzona”) słowiańskich intelektualistów służy przede wszystkim prezentacji najistotniejszych cech odrodzeniowej wyobraźni, która przekuta zostaje w pewien charakterystyczny dyskurs. Jego analiza ujęta została w dwa zasadnicze kręgi problemowe: przestrzeń słowiańską i jej „twórców” - słowiańskich budzicieli. Ten aspekt podwójności przewija się przez całość konstrukcji książki - syntetyzujące analizy pewnych zjawisk społecznych i kulturowych zderzają się tu z „pojedynczością” indywidualnych losów, a przyjęta przez Autorkę strategia badawcza stanowi zarazem swoistą deklaracją metodologiczną, jest wyrazem zainteresowania historią „słabą”, świadectwem „prywatnym”. Książka dzieli się na dwie części. W pierwszej kolejne rozdziały dotyczą sposobów przejawiania się słowiańskiej przestrzeni i jej granic. Pierwszy rozdział (Tożsamość nadana, czyli słowiańska między-przestrzeń) traktuje o istotnej jej właściwości, jaką jest istnienie między żywiołem niemieckim i węgierskim. Drugi („Mordercy ducha i ciała”) analizuje rekompensacyjną rolę negatywnego stereotypu wrogów; trzeci (Głos życia - mowa słowiańska - świat słowiański) tematyzuje zagadnienie języka Słowian w listach a czwarty (Jeruzalem utracone - Jeruzalem odzyskane) omawia status przestrzeni słowiańskiej jako przestrzeni świętej. Druga część poświęcona jest autorefleksji słowiańskich intelektualistów, dotyczącej ich roli i miejsca w procesie odrodzeniowym. Kolejne rozdziały śledzą ich status wobec narodu (Od wyodrębnienia do wyobcowania), analizują kwestie słowiańskiej tożsamości, która jawi się tożsamością naddaną (Tożsamość dana i za-dana), rozważają zagadnienie granic patriotycznego poświęcenia (Choroba jako sposób życia dla narodu. Symptomy i stygmaty) oraz interpretują wspólnotę intelektualistów jako grupę etosową (Między etosem i rzeczywistością).

The subject of this book is the analysis of the correspondence of Slavic patriotic activist, which - so far - stays in the shadow of their literary and journalistic work. Letters were here presented mostly as the “texts of the culture”, that can be treated as - in fact - one text, full of key-words, which anticipate the whole “universe” of the revival imagination, for every sign, interpreted correctly, will lead us to the better recognition of the whole code. Correspondence community of the Slavic intellectuals presented in this book (the real one, but also “imagined”) allow us to present the most significant features of the national revival imagination, which are “transformed” into the special discourse. It is analyzed in division on to main problems: Slavic space and its creators – Slavic intellectuals. This duality is present in the whole construction of the book - analysis of the social and cultural phenomena are confronted with the individual biographies. This research strategy comprise also a peculiar methodological declaration. “Weak” evidence, “private testimony” presents themselves as a mail subject of the analysis. In the first part of the book following chapters presents the way the Slavic space manifests itself in the letters. First chapter (Identity confered – Slavic inter-space) describes the most important feature of that space, which is being in between of the German and Hungarian element. Second chapter (“The Murderers of the spirit and the body”) presents the negative stereotypes of the Germans and Hungarians. Third one (The voice of life - Slavonic language - Slavic World) focuses on the importance of the national language in creation of the patriotic space. Fourth chapter analyses the sacredness of the Slavic space (Jerusalem lost - Jerusalem retaken). The second part of the book is devoted to the Slavic intellectuals and their role in the national revival. First chapter focuses on their relation to the nation (From the separation, to the alienation). Second one presents the concept of the Slavic identity as the additional identity (Identity given, Identity posed). Third chapter shows the limits of intellectuals’ self-devotion (The sickness as the patriotic way of life. Symptoms and stigmata). The last one interprets the Slavic community of activist as the group ruled by the ethos (Between the ethos and the reality).
