The article is focused on the status and the situation of the Baha’i community in two Middle Eastern countries: Iran (where the Baha’i Faith originates from) and Egypt. In both these Islamic states – Shi’a Iran and Sunni-dominated Egypt – Baha’is are persecuted and their rights are restricted, as Islamic authorities do not recognize their faith as an independent religion. Baha’is are perceived as apostates, members of a hostile political organization associated with Zionism, or spies. However, the situation of the Baha’is in the two countries differs slightly. The article presents a brief history of the religion, followed by similarities and differences between the Baha’is situation in Iran and Egypt, and an analysis of the position of political and religious establishment concerning the Baha’i Faith. It aims to answer the question of whether an improvement of the position of the Baha’i communities in those countries is possible at all.
