The article touches upon the question of imagination in children’s literature in the light of perception and accompanying emotions, with reference to the phenomenological conception of the imaginary. In the process of receiving a book, the child recipient, as the "embodied subject", combines complex cognitive operations in an effort to perceive and imagine. The interaction of a focused, attentive perception and emotions also leads to a harmonious development of the awareness of "I" as knower. These issues, described in the context of the phenomenology of perception (M. Merleau-Ponty et al.) refer to phenomena whose understanding would require a broad multidisciplinary knowledge. Meanwhile, the very existence and functioning of children’s literature provides evidence for imagination in action. Literary fiction in books for children - to mention Janosch’s Oh, wie schön ist Panama (The Trip to Panama)
- allows the child to integrate perception with imagining and, consequently, enables the free "work of dream" and internal development.
