Contemporary kathak in great britain as the space of negotiation of diasporic, transcultural identity

Tematem artykułu jest zagadnienie transkulturowości w kontekście sztuki indyjskiego tańca kathak w środowiskach diaspory. Na przykładzie wybranych dzieł choreografów mieszkających w Wielkiej Brytanii ukazane są czynniki i mechanizmy transformacji w łonie klasycznych form tańca indyjskiego, zwłaszcza w warunkach wielokulturowości i migracji. Artykuł przedstawia zmienne funkcje, status i percepcję tańca indyjskiego w Wielkiej Brytanii, koncentrując się na współczesnych próbach przełamania orientalizmu oraz praktyki kategoryzowania tańca indyjskiego na podstawie kryteriów narodowości czy etniczności. Omówienie wyrastającego z tych motywacji nurtu współczesnego kathak ma służyć zwróceniu uwagi na ideologiczny aspekt tej eksperymentalnej, hybrydalnej twórczości, powstającej w kręgach diaspory. Artykuł opracowano w oparciu o badania archiwalne i terenowe, przeprowadzone przez autorkę w Londynie i Birmingham w 2015 roku.

The article explores the issue of transculturality in the context of Indian dance kathak in the diaspora. Illustrated by examples of selected works of kathak choreographers living in the UK, it points out the factors and mechanisms of transformation in the classical Indian dance, especially in the context of multiculturalism and migration. The article mentions changing functions, status and perceptions of Indian dance in the UK over the past decades, to focus on the contemporary resistance to Orientalism, and the practices of categorizing Indian dance on the basis of the criteria of nation or ethnicity. Discussing the motivations lying behind the emergence of contemporary kathak, the author aims to underline the ideological aspect of the experimental, hybrid choreographies, created in the diaspora. The paper is based on archival research and fieldwork, conducted by the author in London and Birmingham in 2015.
