The word - the picture - the spectacle : correlation between the arts in the descriptions of Vilnius processions during the Feast of Corpus Christi by Walenty Bartoszewski

Artykuł stanowi interpretację dwóch tekstów literackich opisujących parateatralne procesje na Boże Ciało: Pobudki na obchodzenie nabożne świątości rocznej tryumfu i pompy Ciała Bożego (Wilno 1614) oraz Dowodów procesyjej nabożnej i poważnego tryumfu w dzień Przenaświętszego Ciała Bożego (Wilno 1615). Twórcą opisów jest wileński poeta Walenty Bartoszewski, autor utworów religijno-okolicznościowych, którego spuścizna literacka nie została dotychczas powtórnie wydana i nie ma szerszego opracowania. Celem badań autorki było prześledzenie zależności pomiędzy słowem, obrazem i spektaklem w tekstach literackich powstałych na uroczystość Bożego Ciała. Autorka zarysowała tradycję organizacji parateatralnych procesji w środowisku Akademii Wileńskiej, opisała postaci, figury i motywy składające się na pochód procesyjny, zinterpretowała ich symbolikę, a także wskazała podstawowe funkcje, jakie pełniły inscenizacje organizowane z okazji Bożego Ciała.

The paper presents an interpretation of two literary texts describing paratheatrical processions during the Feast of Corpus Christi (Body of Christ): Pobudka na obchodzenie nabożne świątości rocznej tryumfu i pompy Ciała Bożego (Vilnius 1614) and Dowody procesyjej nabożnej i poważnego tryumfu w dzień Przenaświętszego Ciała Bożego (Vilnius 1615). The author of the descriptions is a Vilnius poet - Walenty Bartoszewski - the author of the religious commemorative works, whose literary legacy has not been republished and it lacks a broad elaboration. The aim of the author of the paper was to analyse a correlation between the word, the picture and the spectacle in the literary texts created on the occasion of the Feast of Corpus Christi. The author outlined the tradition of the organization of paratheatrical processions in the environment of the Vilnius Academy. She described the characters, the figures and the motives that constituted an integral part of the procession. In addition, she interpreted their symbolism and indicated the basic functions of the staging organized during the Feast of Corpus Christi.
