Katarzyna Bazarnik’s "Liberature. A Book-bound Genre" is a literary-theoretical monograph that attempts to define liberature in terms of a literary genre. This concept, proposed by Polish poet Zenon Fajfer in 1999, and theoretically developed by Bazarnik, refers to a kind of writing that hybridises literature with practices of visual and spatial arts. In her monograph Bazarnik presents it in the context of postmodernist and contemporary creative writing. She locates her discussion in the context of international theoretical debates. She shows how liberature is indebted to modernist explorations of the materiality of writing pointed by J. McGann, as well as practices of "presentification" described by H.U. Gumbrecht. She flags affinities between liberature and similar concepts: N. Katherine Hayles’s technotexts, Jessica Pressman’s bookishness, Lori Emerson’s readingwriting interfaces, and Alison Gibbons’ analyses of multimodal literature. Finally, reading liberature through contemporary genre theory, she proposes to see it as a multimodal literary genre bound to the architecture of the printed book.
