The criminal provisions of some Islamic countries are based on religious norms and beliefs which can be discriminatory or even oppressive for social groups such as women. The article indicates the differences between the Western and Islamic notions of law and the concepts of offence according to classic Islamic law. Then, Iranian Penal Code's offences concerning the violations of sexual morality are examined. Finally, the discriminatory character of those provisions and their impact on the position of women in Iranian society are addressed.
