Biculturalism and bilingualism in the works of Julia Alvarez

Artykuł ma na celu ukazanie naleciałości językowo-kulturowych w twórczości Julii Álvarez, zwrócenie uwagi na jej pochodzenie i życie oraz doświadczenia, które zmieniły tok myślenia i postępowania autorki. Dotyczy on problemu tłumaczeń wynikających z zawiłości kulturowych, odpowiedzenia sobie na pytanie czy wszystko można i należy przetłumaczyć oraz jaki jest cel pisania powieści używając równocześnie dwóch języków. Na podstawie przykładów postaram się przedstawić jak bardzo dwujęzyczność i transkulturowość są widoczne w twórczości Julii Álvarez.

In the article I would like to show cultural and linguistic traces in some works by Julia Alvarez. I will draw Your attention to some facts of Her life, background and the experience that changed her way of thinking and attitude. I am going to focus on the problem connected with translating Her books, since they are rich in the cultural intricacies and it makes them almost untranslatable. The question is whether we should, at all cost, translate everything we get. Is it possible to translate any text that is originally written in two languages and what is the reason to create such a text? On the basis of some examples, I will do my best to show how much bilingualism and transculturalism interfere in the process of translation.
