This article examines the way Władysław Szlengel writes about things - their functions, the manner in which they co-exist with human world, and the ways in which they are present in the human experience. A selection of his prewar and war poems are carefully analyzed from a comparative perspective. This approach makes it possible both to trace the context-depending changes of the meaning of things mentioned by Szlengel and to identify the distinctiveness of his poetic art, with its transitions, growth, marks of continuity and persistence.
