Antyestetyzm świata przedstawionego w kreskówkach Cartoon Network : próba zastosowania analizy zawartości do badań masowej kultury artystycznej
The article presents an attempt to apply content analysis in the study of mass artistic culture. Contemporary American cartoon series seem to emanate with disgust. The question arises whether this 'animated filthiness' in fact increased or is it only an illusion? The content of 314 episodes of the American cartoon series produced since the golden age of animation up till today has been thoroughly analysed. The results of the analysis confirm the common observation that the increase of antiaesthetism in the reality depicted by cartoons is a fact and that it has been especially rapid since the nineties. "Antiaesthetization" predominantly encompassed the images of characters and made them unrealistic, odd, and irrational (unlike the "natural antiaesthetization" - the result of characters' aging). The sources of that phenomenon may stem out from the resistance of the popculture consumers against the cultural dominance of beauty. The opposition emerging from repletion with postmodern globalized "aesthetic fashioning of reality", described by Wolfgang Welsch, (as well as with standards set by Disney in animation) may find an expression in the popculture itself, mostly in humourous forms. Such interpretation has been inspired by the theory of John Fiske, who believes in active participation of audiences in shaping the meaning of popular culture and the resistance of those audiences to hegemonic frames of interpretation in a variety of forms.
