"Stupid fucking white man?" : anthropological approach to main character's transformation in Jim Jarmusch's "Dead man" (1995)

Autor prezentuje uniwersalny opis najważniejszych etapów rytuału inicjacyjnego i odnajduje ich odpowiedniki w duchowej i światopoglądowej przemianie głównego bohatera filmu Truposz (Jim Jarmusch, 1995). Posługuje się teorią trójdzielnej struktury obrzędu przejścia Victora Turnera, aby przedstawić "procesualny" charakter owej metamorfozy. Ponadto artykuł ukazuje, że duchowa ewolucja bohatera nie wiąże się tylko ze zmianą światopoglądu. Stanowi ona również przygotowanie do pięknego umierania. W zakończeniu autor umieszcza film Jarmuscha w kontekście rozmaitych zjawisk ukazujących wypieranie śmierci z przestrzeni społecznej i kulturowej. W ten sposób przedstawia oryginalność obrazu umierania w analizowanym utworze.

The article presents a universal description of basic stages in the initiation ritual and finds its equivalents in the spiritual and the world-view metamorphosis which the main character in Dead Man (Jim Jarmusch, 1995) goes through. Victor Turner's concept of the rite's of passage tripartite structure is used to demonstrate the gradual aspect of these very changes. Moreover, it is argued that these spiritual changes are not limited to the protagonist’s beliefs and opinions. They are also a preparation to a beautiful death. In conclusion, Jarmusch's film is presented in the context of various phenomen a, which illustrates how death is eliminated from social and cultural space. Hence, the article demonstrates the originality of the film, which is strongly connected with the unique image of dying.
