W ten sposób uczynił je wyjątkowo żywymi i wiarygodnymi formami ekspresji teatralnej.
Among numerous adaptations of Shakespearian plays that were created in the Arab word, those by Sulayman al-Bassam deserve special attention. It is not because of their quantity or significant popularity, which they gained with Arabic and Western audiences. First of all, they constitute a part of a specific and comprehensive project, which was realised in stages over a decade. Individual literary and theatrical pieces were not created as a result of a single closed process stretched over some period of time, but they were following a long path of experiences and revaluations. The processual nature of artistic actions taken by the Kuwaiti-British playwright and director within the Shakespearean context has clearly put a stamp on all of his adaptations. In this way, he made his forms of artistic expression exceptionally vivid and credible. Due to his origins, al-Bassam, linked to the Arab and Western World, looking for the ways for cultural juxtaposition, has found the drama of the British playwright to be perfect material to achieve his goals to form the most topical, allusive, but clear message that would combine the locality of the addressed issues together with its universal overtone. The language of Shakespeare was the basis for this juxtaposition. The Kuwaiti British playwright undertook a difficult task to find synonyms and equivalents with a taste of the Middle Eastern culture. He emerged from this trial unscathed, which can be proved with the positive reception of his adaptations in the entire world. Sulayman al-Bassam often said that Shakespeare's plays are for him some sort of a mask or “a green card”, thanks to which he does not have to worry about consequences of his artistic behaviour. The Kuwaiti British playwright and director, hiding behind Shakespearean plays, permeates them with his own artistic energy, putting them in a new context and creating a multidimensional space for modern reinterpretation. Al-Bassam’s interpretation is an adaptation, not a forced deformation, through which one could see a grimace of the original piece. Through his project, the Kuwaiti British artist breaks the discourse of civilizational confirmation and exposes its weak points, showing them as elements of the game. He also goes beyond post-colonial models, building a bridge between two worlds instead of reaffirming boundaries, spheres of influence and dependency relationships. Thanks to Shakespeare, al-Bassam speaks with the language of the West and shows the West from the eastern perspective. This work is an attempt of take a critical look at the most important output of this artist i.e. his adaptations of Shakespearean plays. The presented analyses are a starting point for further deliberations, for which the context is provided by the issues related to the modern Arabic theatre as well as intercultural exchange taking place in the artistic dimension.
