Voiceover as spoken discourse
This chapter explores some of the techniques used in the Polish voiceover translation of fictional programmes to render the conversational features of audiovisual dialogue. For this purpose, the subtitled and voiced-over versions of two episodes of Desperate Housewives Season II are compared. The analysis focuses on specific features of conversational register, included in the original dialogues to simulate some aspects of everyday conversation. Findings show that a different approach to orality is adopted in each of the modalities under study: voiceover translation seems to emphasise the context-dependence and intimacy of on-screen exchanges, paying less attention to spontaneity, tentativeness and interactivity, inferable from the characters’ behaviour on screen; subtitles, on the contrary, seem to reflect spontaneity and interactivity, but avoid the simplicity and reductionism of conversational grammar. The analysis also suggests that, despite its idiosyncrasy and culture-specificity, voiceover translation of fiction certainly raises issues shared by other genres and audiovisual translation modalities.
