Akcenty Ivanovich Poprishchin, alleged author and the main character of "Diary of a Madman" claims women to be in love with the devil. Analysis of this text and the other works of Gogol leads to the conclusion that under the concept of devil (devilishness) one small understand dullness, mediocrity, the lack of individual features and total victory of flesh and matter upon the spirit. Woman's "natural" attraction towards devilishness perceived in this way can be explained as a consequence of the need to fulfil her main biological role - giving birth to a child and provide for it which in turn brings about the choice of handsome, healthy partner who is well off but average at heart. As a consequence, "woman's element" starts to resemble the power of Mother Earth constantly giving birth and devouring fruits of her bosom. Such an approach towards woman made Gogol avoid so popular themes in Russian literature as wise wife or innocent victim.
