Women had always played a significant role in the history of Russian culture but at the age of Romanticism it considerably increased. The influence of women who had been grown up in the spirit of West-European Romantic culture, especialy its German variant, was of particular importance; they were also influenced by the character and thoughts of Stankevich's Circle members who, later, in the nineteen-forties laid the foundations od occidentalism. The humanistic principle of the individual's independence which had initially faced great difficulties in adaptation to Orthodox Russia, in the end becamne the foundation stone of Modernity. Educated women who can be called the guardians of Russian Europeanism, among thers - four Bakunin sisters, had a strong influence on the future belevers of Occidentalism stance becausew of their personalities which transfixed with spiritual richness, manifested themselves in sophisticated verbal and emotional forms of expression and, first of all, were an example of mature individualism. It was confirmed by personal relationships between sisters Lyubov and Barbara Bakunin and Nikolay Stankevich, between their younger sister Alexandra and Vissarion Belinsky, and between Tatiana Bakunin and Ivan Turgenev- a future chronicler of Russian Occidentakism and authior of outstanding atmospheric prose which became a part of all-European intellectual and aesthetic trends.pl
