The specific form that the topos of the Old Actor was given in Polish culture was due to the play "Affranchisement" by Stanisław Wyspiański (1903). According to Wyspiański, what makes the condition of the Old Actor so tragic is the interference of life and art - a process that ends with the ultimate statement: "I am nothing". In opposition to that pessimistic formula, senior actors, born in the 1920s, are still active in the Polish contemporary theatre (of the last decade). The actors of interwar generation bring on stage a marvelous technique of voice, a former art of diction, an admirable capability of metamorphosis together with a tendency of being regarded rather as individual persons than fictional characters. The most hidden secret of the old actor consists in the incarnation of the world which does not exist anymore and thus is inaccessible for spectators.
