Virtual transitioning into real : Jewishness in Central Eastern Europe
Poland
Krakow
Jewish Culture Festival
virtual jewishness
In the 21st century - when looking at only a few thousand self-declared Polish Jews vis-a-vis the mass public attending Krakow's Jewish Culture Festival - to what extent is Polish Jewishness "virtual" and to what extent "real"? Is this cultural or commercial, what about antisemitism and an anti-antisemitism? Is this an expression of "phantom pain" or a "performativity"? Yet this Jewishness is luring not only the elderly who are nostalgic, but above all the young who are curious. In the long run, the initially virtual draws the attention not only of tourists, but of governments, philanthropists, and activists.
