The advantage of the short‑sighted : between history and literature

Through a brief presentation of some culturally specific aspects of the process of development of the Brazilian intellectual life, this paper seeks to shed new light on the concept of auditivity, considered fundamental for the study of the complex relations between literature and history in Brazil. From this perspective, autonarrative fiction with memory feature should be seen as an alternative to historical discourse, since it declares its own fictionality and the limitations of its own narrative focus, and therefore is capable of avoiding the globalizing claims that in the case of heterogeneous Brazilian society appears to be inappropriate.

Através de uma sucinta apresentação dos aspectos culturalmente específicos do processo de desenvolvimento da vida intelectual brasileira procura-se lançar uma nova luz sobre o conceito de auditividade, considerado fundamental para o estudo das complexas relações entre a literatura e a história no Brasil. Sob essa ótica, a ficção autonarrativa de feição memorialística deve ser apreendida enquanto uma alternativa para o discurso histórico, uma vez que, manifestando a sua própria ficcionalidade e as limitações do seu próprio foco narrativo, ela consegue evitar as pretensões globalizantes que no caso da heterogênea sociedade brasileira se afiguram inadequadas.
