The relationships between the university and secondary school in Galicia in the
second half of the nineteenth century were diverse, and one of the sources of scientific
success of the school was a secondary school graduate well prepared for studies. The
Polonization of education brought a new fundamental challenge, which was the need to
develop textbooks for secondary schools. Translations of textbooks written by German or
Czech authors badly needed a replacement. Professors of the University in Krakow joined the project. Among the authors of textbooks one could find: mathematician Marian Baraniecki, chemist Emil Czymiański, historians Anatol Lewicki and Wincenty Zakrzewski, specialist in Ukrainian studies Bogdan Łepki, zoologist Maksymilian Nowicki, botanist Józef Rostafiński and literary historian Stanisław Tarnowski. Their works gained recognition and had many editions. Rostafiński’s textbooks were the first modern textbooks in Polish Galicia. They found their permanent place in the history of the teaching of botany and were regarded as one of the best in Europe. A. Lewicki’s textbook A Short History of Poland and of Ruthenian Countries Connected to It became an example of one of the most vital books in the teaching of the history of Poland. The canon of textbooks for senior secondary classes of this period included also W. Zakrzewski’s General History. The book was characterized by a clear, logical layout and was also ranked among the best books on the European level. The involvement of scientists in the development of school textbooks was an important
part of satisfying Galician society’s educational needs by intellectual elites and it was
also the means of disseminating scientific achievements.
