Parties and factions in the final period of the rule of king Augustus III

Celem artykułu jest analiza partii i fakcji istniejących w schyłkowym okresie rządów Augusta III oraz odkrycie właściwego dla epoki znaczenia obu terminów. Wśród wykorzystanych źródeł dominuje publicystyka, która przynosi informacje zarówno o istniejących podziałach na scenie politycznej, jak i o hasłach wykorzystywanych w dynamizowaniu debaty politycznej. Okazuje się, że istnienia XVIII-wiecznych partii nie gwarantowała osoba lidera, struktura bądź program polityczny; o wiele istotniejsze były hasła programowe i bieżąca, najczęściej koniunkturalna gra polityczna, w trakcie której dochodziło do istotnych zmian na scenie politycznej (przykładem są lata 1762-1763). Partyjna rzeczywistość była dynamiczna i niejednorodna, podobnie jak partyjna przynależność: raczej związana z głoszonymi hasłami, ewentualnymi profitami finansowymi, a nie programem. W rezultacie stronnictwa istniejące w schyłkowym okresie rządów Augusta III: Familia, republikanci oraz obóz dworski, były bardziej platformami porozumienia różnorodnych formacji partyjnych i fakcyjnych niż zwartymi, jednorodnymi formacjami.

The aim of the article is to analyze the parties and factions existing in the final period of Augustus III Wettin reign and to discover the appropriate meaning of the terms “party” and “faction” in this period. It is journalism or “occasional writings” that dominates in the group of the sources used as a base of information about the divisions existing on the political scene and “principles” exploited to make fight between parties more dynamic. It turns out that the existence of parties was not guaranteed by the person of the powerful leader, structures or parties’ programme. Much more important were “principles” or “slogans” and current opportunistic fight on the domestic forum, during which (e.g. in the years 1762-1763) significant changes on the political scene were introduced. Consequently both political divisions and parties’ affiliations were dynamic and heterogeneous, related to promoted slogans, possible financial benefits, not the programme. As a result the parties existing in this period in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: Familia, republican party and court party were rather platforms of agreement of various parties and factions than compact, homogeneous formations.
