Th is article analyzes the ethnic discourse in the novels and essays of Józef Wittlin. Treated as a literary projection of social memory, national stereotypes and ethnic identity, Wittlin’s ethnic discourse off ers a unique insight into the complex relationships between the indigenous Hutsuls, Jews, Austrians, Hungarians, Czechs and Russians. A careful analysis of the ethnic discourse in Wittlin’s masterpiece, the novel Salt of the Earth (1935), reveals that one of its distinctive features is an ecumenical openness. Notwithstanding his Jewish background, Wittlin was a discreet supporter of Franz Joseph I’s Catholic monarchy and a Polish patriot remarkably sympathetic to all ethnic minorities
