Difficulties associated with the visual evaluation of cloud cover at Hornsund (SW Spitsbergen)

Obserwacje zachmurzenia w Polskiej Stacji Polarnej w Hornsundzie prowadzone są w ramach działającej tam stacji meteorologicznej. W opracowaniu analizowano czynniki utrudniające ocenę wielkości zachmurzenia i rozpoznawanie rodzajów chmur. Uwzględniono m.in obniżoną wysokość troposfery, noc polarną, orografię. Przedstawiono podział chmur orograficznych występujących w rejonie stacji oraz dokonano próby przedstawienia mechanizmu ich powstawania. Zwrócono uwagę na niedoskonałość Międzynarodowego Atlasu Chmur w zakresie podziału chmur orograficznych oraz problemy związane z klasyfikacją tych chmur dla potrzeb depeszy synoptycznej i zapisu w dzienniku meteorologicznym. Zasygnalizowano kwestię niejednorodności danych w zakresie rodzajów chmur spowodowaną coroczną zmianą obserwatorów meteorologicznych.

Observations of cloudiness at the Polish Polar Station in Hornsund are conducted by meteorological station operating there. Presented work analyzes the factors hindering the evaluation of cloudiness, particularly the identification of cloud types. It takes into account lowered height of the troposphere, polar night, orography and its effect on the airflow. The authors present the classification of orographic clouds (wave clouds, banner clouds, hat clouds and foehn banks) with their characteristic and occurrence conditions. The inadequacy of the International Cloud Atlas concerning the division of orographic clouds is highlighted. The problems associated with the classification of these clouds for SYNOP reports and records in the meteorological log become a kind of complication for observers. The unique nature of clouds at polar regions and the lack of accurate orographic clouds identification criteria may induce inaccuracy and errors on cloud data series. The heterogeneity of data may also be caused by the annual change in the meteorological observers.
