Erwin Panofsky, Hans Sedlmayr, Lech Kalinowski, and the Meanders of Iconology
In 1964-1965, Lech Kalinowski met Erwin Panofsky in Princeton. One of the results of his stay in the US was the paper "Iconology or Iconography?", published in 1972 in Polish. In this paper Kalinowski claimed that Panofsky's own attitude towards the term "iconology" was full of self-restraint and all kinds of reservations. Kalinowski used the term iconology in his first serious publication in the 1950s. In these studies, he developed methodological ideas of Godefridus Johannes Hoogewerff, but he also followed Hans Sedlmayr. The transformations that Kalinowski's methodological attitudes had undergone from the end of the 1940s till the end of the next decade perfectly demonstrate that Panofsky's proposal was not born in a vacuum but constituted yet another step in discussing the methods of investigating the meaning of a work of art. Already, scholars were able to choose between a few varieties of iconology. This awareness made Kalinowski sensitive to the usage of the term "iconology" and allowed him to identify a similar hesitation in the attitude of the author of the Studies in Iconology.
